The Story of White Elephant

White Elephant traces its roots to Ettenstatt, Bavaria, where Robert Maderholz produced high-quality briar pipes between 1945 and 1984.

In 1984, his son Michael Maderholz developed the company’s first machines for pipe-filter production. White Elephant subsequently became known for its premium pipe filters, including its famous meerschaum filters, before later expanding into pipe-cleaner production.

Today, White Elephant is part of Kopp Filters and remains the only manufacturer of pipe cleaners in Germany. Its filters and pipe cleaners continue to be produced in Ettenstatt, Bavaria.

After several decades away from pipe production, White Elephant has returned to its roots. The current pipe collection is manufactured in Italy for the German brand, combining White Elephant’s heritage with the expertise of traditional Italian pipe makers.
