The White Elephant Erta Ale 5 Pipe combines the heritage of the renowned German White Elephant brand with traditional Italian pipe craftsmanship. Crafted from carefully selected ash wood, it features a striking grey finish inspired by volcanic landscapes and beautifully highlights the natural grain of the wood.

Its most distinctive feature is the innovative graphite tobacco chamber inlay, developed by Kopp Pipes and manufactured in Germany. Made from compressed carbon, the insert is fire-resistant, flavour-neutral, absorbs virtually no moisture and is exceptionally easy to clean. It absorbs almost none of the tobacco’s aroma, making it easy to enjoy different tobacco blends in the same pipe.

The distinctive Half-Bent Calabash shape offers a generous bowl with flowing, elegant lines and excellent comfort in the hand. A beautifully integrated zebrawood ring complements the marbled acrylic mouthpiece, giving every pipe a distinctive appearance. The pipe is fitted with a universal 9 mm filter system, compatible with all standard 9 mm pipe filters.

Made in Italy for the German White Elephant brand, this model combines modern Italian pipe making with one of Germany’s most respected names in pipe accessories.

The Story of White Elephant

White Elephant traces its roots to Ettenstatt, Bavaria, where Robert Maderholz produced high-quality briar pipes between 1945 and 1984.

In 1984, his son Michael Maderholz developed the company’s first machines for pipe-filter production. White Elephant subsequently became known for its premium pipe filters, including its famous meerschaum filters, before later expanding into pipe-cleaner production.

Today, White Elephant is part of Kopp Filters and remains the only manufacturer of pipe cleaners in Germany. Its filters and pipe cleaners continue to be produced in Ettenstatt, Bavaria.

After several decades away from pipe production, White Elephant has returned to its roots. The current pipe collection is manufactured in Italy for the German brand, combining White Elephant’s heritage with the expertise of traditional Italian pipe makers.
