The Story of White Elephant

White Elephant traces its roots to Ettenstatt, Bavaria, where Robert Maderholz established a pipe-manufacturing business shortly after the Second World War. Between 1945 and 1984, the company produced high-quality briar pipes as well as pipes fitted with meerschaum inserts.

In 1984, his son Michael Maderholz developed the company’s first machines for pipe-filter production. White Elephant subsequently became known for its premium pipe filters, including its famous meerschaum filters, before later expanding into pipe-cleaner production.

The name White Elephant was inspired by the African origin of the meerschaum used for its filters. Over time, the white elephant became the recognisable symbol of the German brand and its commitment to traditional pipe-smoking accessories.

Today, White Elephant is part of Kopp Filters and remains the only manufacturer of pipe cleaners in Germany. Its filters and pipe cleaners continue to be produced in Ettenstatt, Bavaria.

After several decades away from pipe production, White Elephant has returned to its roots. The current pipe collection is manufactured in Italy for the German brand, combining White Elephant’s heritage with the expertise of traditional Italian pipe makers.
