Stanwell – Danish Design Heritage Since 1948
Stanwell is one of the most influential names in the history of Danish pipe making. The story began in 1942, when Poul Nielsen founded a small woodworking workshop on the Danish island of Zealand. During the difficult war years, the company initially produced wooden shoes and other everyday wooden goods before turning to pipe production.
Once high-quality briar became available again, Nielsen began producing briar pipes, and in 1948 the Stanwell name was introduced. The deliberately English-sounding name reflected the prestige enjoyed by English pipes at the time, but Stanwell would soon develop an unmistakable identity of its own.
The Birth of Danish Style
A defining chapter in Stanwell’s history was its close collaboration with some of Denmark’s most important independent pipe makers. Rather than simply reproducing traditional English shapes, Stanwell brought the ideas and distinctive design language of Danish artisan pipe making into serial production.
The legendary Sixten Ivarsson played a particularly important role in this development. His flowing, organic designs helped establish what became internationally known as Danish Style and had a lasting influence on the Stanwell collection.
Over the years, Stanwell also worked with renowned pipe makers and designers including Tom Eltang, Jess Chonowitsch, Per Hansen of S. Bang, Ulf Noltensmeier and many others. Their creativity and craftsmanship contributed to numerous Stanwell shapes and helped give the brand a design language that remains recognizable today.
In 1965, Stanwell moved production to Borup near Copenhagen, where it operated one of the world’s largest and most modern pipe factories of its time. Germany became the brand’s largest export market, and Stanwell pipes gained an international reputation for combining distinctive Danish design with reliable series production.
From Denmark to Italy
After decades of production in Denmark, the Borup factory eventually closed and Danish production ended in 2009. Manufacturing was subsequently transferred entirely to Italy, a country with its own long tradition of briar pipe making.
Today, a new chapter in the Stanwell story is being written in cooperation with Kopp Pipes. Under an exclusive licensing agreement, Kopp is responsible for the development of the current pipe collection, production management, quality control, warehousing, marketing and distribution throughout Europe.
The current Stanwell pipes are made with great care in a small, owner-operated workshop in Livorno, Italy, which currently employs only six people. Importantly, the workshop possesses nearly all of the original Stanwell models, helping to preserve the historic shapes and distinctive character that have defined the brand for generations.
A Historic Brand Returns
The relaunched Stanwell collection begins with twelve of the brand’s bestselling classic 9 mm models. These are available in the Vario and København series in a variety of finishes. The core collection is planned to grow gradually, with historic special editions and the Hans Christian Andersen series among the projects intended for the future.
The connection to Danish pipe making is also set to continue. New Pipe of the Year editions developed in collaboration with Danish pipe makers are planned, and renowned Danish pipe maker Tom Eltang has already pledged his support.
More than seven decades after the Stanwell name first appeared, the philosophy behind the brand remains remarkably relevant: bringing the creativity and distinctive shapes of Danish pipe design to pipe enthusiasts through carefully made briar pipes.
For us, it is precisely this combination of historic Danish design, legendary names in pipe making and today’s small-scale Italian production that makes Stanwell such an interesting brand to rediscover.
